The Protestant Archive of Baden and Wurttemberg in Stuttgart is the central archive of the Protestant Church in Württemberg and the Protestant Church in Baden. The archive exercises professional supervision over archival administration and preservation and assumes responsibility for the records of all creators of written material within the area of these two regional churches.
The Protestant Regional Church in Badenia is located in the west of the federal state Baden-Wurttemberg and is therefore one of two Protestant regional churches in this state. It comprises the territory of the former state of Badenia that existed until 1945.
The Protestant Archive of Baden and Württemberg holds 2,300 church registers from 270 parishes of the Baden regional church. More than half of the parishes still keep their church books on site within the parish. As soon as a congregation opts for central storage in the Regional Church Archive, backup filming gaps are closed, the books are digitized and subsequently passed on to Archion for online publication within the framework of the vesting periods.
As church books are unique, hand-written and therefore irreplaceable sources, almost all church records of the Badenian Regional Church were backed up as films in the 1960s. In recent years, these filmed church books have been digitized by a service provider on behalf of the Regional Church Archive and made available for you online on Archion.
Church books from more than 600 Protestant parishes in Badenia are available online for your family research. These include church and family books from the earliest written records to the year 1870. Individual church books reach beyond 1870 if they were started before that year and do not exceed the data protection limit.
Occasional subsequent deliveries will still expand the inventory. These are church books that were not filmed in the 1960s. These subsequent filmings are always commissioned when parishes transfer further books for custody to the Protestant Archive of Baden and Württemberg.
