Seeking origins: Johann Hermann Bruns (1797–1875) + Familie Hanneken/Brake, Niedersachsen, emigrants to Ohio USA

I am researching German immigrant families who settled in Ohio and Kentucky, USA around 1840–1870, and am seeking the German origins of two Lower Saxon families.

Family 1 — BRUNS:
Johann Hermann Bruns, born approximately 1797 in Lower Saxony, died 1875. His father was Gerhard Bruns; his mother's name appears as "Thecla Sch..." (surname unclear). Johann Hermann's daughter Helena Bruns (1841–1917) emigrated to the USA. I am seeking the birthplace and parentage of Johann Hermann Bruns and any records for Gerhard Bruns in Lower Saxon church records.

Family 2 — HANNEKEN:
Wilhelm Hanneken (no dates known) married Anna Maria Brake. Their daughter Elisabeth (born approximately 1802) is connected to the same emigrant circle. The Hanneken surname is recorded as highly concentrated in Lower Saxony (88% of German occurrences in Niedersachsen). I am seeking any records for Wilhelm Hanneken and Anna Maria Brake in Lower Saxon parishes.

Both families appear to have emigrated through the Hamburg–America line to Ohio in the mid-19th century. Any help finding the home parish or village would be greatly appreciated.

Go from here, and open the following link …….. quite a number of researchers (including some in the U.S.) seem to already have data for him

Hanneken - Brake

This family was of Roman Catholic religious belief and thus you won’t find anything about them / their records in church registers in the holdings of Archion.

Roman Catholic church registers are available at Matricula Online.

As an example: Lorup, Emsland is here

In case you may need further help you could consider to contact

Archion and this forum cannot help beyond this information.

This is another family from the Emsland region in Germany.

They were also of Roman Catholic religious belief.

Aschendorf (Papenburg) church registers may be found here

Other than that what I wrote above regarding further research for „Hanneken“ beyond this point also applies here, sorry.

One final addition regarding "Bruns" ---- "Bruns - Hanneken"

Additional relevant Roman Catholic church registers for this

Maybe it's worth to contact these other researchers who are already researching is family ...... as I said: also Roman Catholic.... from the Emsland region ..... "nothing on Archion's table" ;)

Good luck with your further research on these lines.

Kind regards, Vera

Thank you very much — this is extremely helpful and corrects an important assumption. I had assumed both families were Protestant based on their Lower Saxon location, but you have shown that both Bruns (Aschendorf) and Hanneken (Lorup) are Roman Catholic Emsland families. This redirects the research entirely to Matricula Online (Diocese of Osnabrück) rather than Archion.

I will follow the Arcinsys emigration record for Bruns (NLA OS Rep 350 Asch Nr. 52c), the Aschendorf St. Amandus and Esterwegen St. Johann records for Bruns, and the Lorup Mariä Himmelfahrt records for Hanneken/Brake. The GedBAS and MyHeritage links for Johann Hermann Bruns are also very useful starting points.

Thank you again for such thorough and prompt assistance.
