SOPHIA HANS 1800 - help

I don’t know German, I’m sorry. I need help if anyone can offer some especially because I don’t have alot of information. I’ve been looking for info on one of my 4x great grandmother. No one in the family passed down her info so it has been very difficult finding anything.

I don’t know her mother’s name. Her father’s name was incomplete “Johann Hans”. She had a sister named Fanny and another sister named Brigitta (family said Breckita but that’s wrong). She lived in the Rhineland area before coming to America with her family. Brigitta stayed in Germany. Her parents died at sea.

Sophia was born on March 10th 1800, but her headstone indicates she was born March 20th. I was only told she was born in Baden. On a census report from America Sophia said she was born in Bavaria. With how the territories were back then and not having her complete family’s name - it’s become really difficult to find them in Germany. Does anyone know how I could possibly find something? I feel like there has to be some kind of document that exists that includes the daughter’s names together.

Good morning.

This is your family tree on Ancestry, right?

....showing Sophia Hans and descendants, right?

....and this lady's headstone to which you refer

I trust -since signing up on Archion- you already "learned" that it is not possible to automatically search Archion's holdings for family names. So every relevant church book requires manual search for the desired entries.

Given that to either start in the German state "Baden-Wuerttemberg" , or in the German state "Bavaria" to check each and every single church register for a birth in March 1800 will easily turn out to be a really tedious / challenging task, right?

And one also has to keep in mind that Archion "only" provides Evangelical / Lutheran church registers, while for both regions / states there also exist Roman Catholic church registers as well - i.e. available (in parts) on the different platform: Matricula online.

So a question to you please: what is / was your ancestors religious belief?

Did you check for a ship passenger list?
Did you find her in any Census prior to 1850?
What makes you think that her region of origin is either Baden or Bavaria?

Sorry for so many questions, however, the family name "Hans" is really so widely spread allover Germany, that one really needs to find as many hints as possible in order to at least narrow down the "wider region" of origin.

Somehow pure wild guessing only: may be her name was Sophia Johannsen / Johandatter - meaning in patronymic naming tradition that she was the daughter of Johann.... (diminutive form: Hans)
..... that would then point you to the northern German states: Schleswig-Holstein or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.....

I'd think that "Hans" ist the family name and her father's name is just "Johann" or "Johannes"

Unfortunately, Baden is a region in the Southwest of germany and a town in the canton Aargau in Switzerland (and a district).

Church records of Baden inh Switzerlandcan be found at https://sirius1-cosmos.docuteam.clo...t][0]=6&filter[structure][path]=6-1~6-7~6-108 (protestantic and catholic) for free.

Yes, that’s my family tree. And yes, I knew joining Archion I was going to have to manually search through a lot of documents. Also yes, I know it’s a very tedious task.

1 - Sophia’s husband and his family were mennonites. When they married and had kids, their children all the way to my line have all been Lutherans. Before her marriage to, I assumed Sophia and her family were also mennonites but I couldn’t find anything in any Mennonite record. This is why I decided to start searching through Lutheran and Catholic records.

2 - I have an autobiography someone in the family wrote about her. It contains no details about her life in Germany except they lived in the Rhineland area. When I first added Sophia to my family tree, her birth hints from other tree members indicted Baden. Then I found a census report that stated she was born in Bavaria.

3 - I have not found any census reports of her before 1850. Besides what I know from her autobiography, I can’t find any documented record of her prior to 1850. I am working with the state she lived in when she immigrated to find more info.

4 - I also cannot find any passenger list for her or her family. I found some lists for passengers that had luggage but most of the lists don’t say names, they’re listed as “family of 3” or something similar. So that’s not helpful.

5 - Yeah, I’ve discovered in the past year all the different regions and territories of Germany from that time. And how widespread these names are. I’ve been searching for all different variations.

Just to be clear, I know what I’m searching for is difficult and not easy at all. I’m aware I may end up never finding anything about her and her family. I’ve been researching Sophia and her family for a long time now and I cannot find anything. I just recently learned about Archion and have been looking through documents like crazy. I wanted to make this thread to see if others had any good advice for me who may have had similar research struggles. I appreciate your response, thank you!

Thanks for your very detailed reply. Much appreciated.

When you "follow" the details on their children.... is there nowhere even the tiniest hint -other than perhaps: Germany- as to where their parents, especially their mother, was / were from?

Regarding the "potential" family name "Hans" just a visualized idea regarding it's spreading allover Germany

Thanks.

Unfortunately no. When I follow their children, there are no hints about where she’s from. Before living in Ohio in the US, her and one sister arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and lived in the Lancaster, PA area. Specifically Strasburg, Pennsylvania. I’ve been searching for anything in Pennsylvania that might give me a hint but so far no luck.

Every other family line I can find and follow except hers. It’s aggravating.
