Upr oder Uffer Heide

Hello John.

There is actual no difference at all between these names.

What you see are simple spelling and dialectical differences.

Regardless whether you say

uffer / uf der

or

upr / upper

both translate to today's German as: Auf der / Aufder

Greetings Vera

Fixed / non-changeable family names did not come into existence in Germany prior to 1870 / 1874 / 1876 when civil registration offices (Standesamt / Standesämter) were introduced by the Civil Status Act (Personenstandsgesetz).

Prior to this you may find the family name of the same / identical family spelled in multiple ways in parallel.
