Occupation?

A person on Geneanet has the following description of my ancestor, Johann Christoph Frangel:

Hoffmann auf dem Dusselhof, Erbbestander z. Schafhausen.

I know he died in Schafhausen in 1767. Can anyone please help with a translation?

Thank you,

Ellen

Thank you for replying. I am sorry to be ignorant in this matter, but I do not understand.

Does "Erb" have something to do with inheritance?

Does anyone know what Düßelhof means? I do not see it as a location (near Alzey).

"Hoffmann" in this sentence would be a surname?

Again, I apologize for my lack of understanding.

Kind regards,

Ellen

Als Beständer (auch Beständner oder Bestandinhaber) bezeichnete man Pächter oder Mieter eines Eigentums – typischerweise herrschaftlicher Güter, Höfe, Felder oder Mühlen

In case this property on lease or rent was inherited i.e. from father to son, the term Erbbeständer applies.

No, Hoffmann was not used as a family name.

Als Hofmann bzw. Hoffmann bezeichnete man den Pächter eines Gehöfts bzw. dem Grundherren zu Diensten verpflichteten Bauern, gelegentlich auch einen Höfling.

Basically Beständer / Erbbeständer / Hofmann / Hoffmann etc are simply different terms only for people having a farm / an estate / a mill or else on rent or lease. They never owned the property!

Düßelhof seems to be the name of a farm / estate.

Hope that helps,
Vera
