Birth Record Translation

Hi Karen,
Yes, this could be the one you´re looking for:

Natus den 2 Octobr. Vesperi Zwischen 4 et 5
Parentes: Marthin Matthes, Beckerhandw.
Margaretha Catharina
Renatus altero die hora 1 m.?
Suscept.: ..? Hinrich Schon....? Schneider
Niclas Fl..?k Bürger Undt Henkers (?) Mann.
Vocatus Johann Niclas.

Born October 2 in the evening between 4 and 5
Parents: Marthin Matthes, Baker
Margaretha Catharina
Baptized the next day at 1 pm
Godparents: ..? Hinrich Schon....? Tailor
Niclas Fl..?k Citizen and executioner (?)
Named Johann Niclas.

I´m not sure about the godfathers´ names, especially about the second godfather´s profession, which, to me, looks like either Heitzer (stoker) or Henker. Unfortunately, there´s no clue as to where the parents are from. Did you find their marriage?

Regards
Angelika

Hi Angelika. No I don't have their marriage unfortunately. I think it is pre 1675 when the records from Dorzbach start. I've also looked post this birth date of Nicolas in case they married he was born. To date I haven't found anything though. It's just possible that Martin was born somewhere else but I need a hint in order to search. Thanks and Regards, Karen.

No the groom is Michael Dill.

I think it would have been mentioned in the baptism record of Johann Niclas, if he was illegitimate. The parents most probably have married before 1675.

You should look for all birth, marriage and death records with the name Mathes after 1675. If you are lucky relatives are mentioned somewhere. If you think he came from a different place, have a look at the godfathers and godmothers of their children and see where they come from. Check if church records before 1675 exist there.

Sometimes it is possible to verify other sources than church registers. However, you might need to go to the archives. And sometimes it's just not possible to find further information and you are at the end of that branch. But don't give up too soon.

Martin Mathes died on May 3, 1702 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 11 days. This results in a computed birth date of February 20, 1623. So he was already 52 years old in 1675. The marriage with Margaretha could have been his second or even third one.

Thanks for all this especially the motivation. I do know he had a son in 1659 by a previous wife but limited detail there for the same reason. I will keep trying a little longer since I have 400 years of family history from 1623 to 2023. The same profession follows down the generations too. I am putting it all in a book for the family, so it's worth trying to get just 1 more generation! Thanks, Karen.

There is nothing about where Martin Matthes comes from.
The lengthy paragraph is about one of the godfathers, Johann Albrecht von Eyb, who was the son of the local sovereign Albrecht Ludwig von Eyb.

This is nothing about your immediate ancestor, but as @eggi already wrote before

„The lengthy paragraph is about one of the godfathers, Johann Albrecht von Eyb, who was the son of the local sovereign Albrecht Ludwig von Eyb.“

It takes quite some time and efforts to even transcribe it.

So please seriously take into account if you really need it, or if it would only be nice to have.
Thanks.
