Beginner Search Question - English

I had someone search this site for me and he was able to very quickly pull up documents. I am able to find where I believe the records for my family are, but once I get to the written document, it is extremely long. Is there a way to search for a specific name in a document other than browse through 100s of pages?

My example: He was able to locate the baptism record for Johann Georg Sauer, knowing only that he was probably born in Bieber, Gelnhausen with a very general time period. He found this in minutes, not hours. Within about 15 minutes he was able to show me several documents with specifics pertaining to my family.

Any advice for a novice would be much appreciated.

Sorry about the English. My German is terrible. :)

Hi Kimberly,

No, it is not currently possible to search for specific entries or search within a scanned image. However, some church books do include an index of the records. With a list of page or record numbers from the index and an experienced eye, the process of finding relevant records moves along at a much brisker pace than going page by page looking for ancestors.

If the church book has been indexed, check the beginning or end of each book. For example, the baptisms from Bieber between 1830 and 1892 (Tauf 1830-1892) are indexed at the end of the book, starting at image 1339 (refer to the thumbnails on the left of the web page).

Also, note that the first image of that recordset (image #1059) is a title page created by the Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evangelischen Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck with a note at the bottom that says "mit Register," or "with register (index)." I love seeing "mit Register" when searching for records!

While an index is extremely useful, I'd still recommend going through each page to make sure something wasn't overlooked. I ran into this issue a few weeks ago while looking for the death/burial record of a 6th great-grandmother from Bavaria. Her name was omitted from the index, so I had to go through about 20 years of records to find her.
