Looking for Guillermo (Wilhelm) Helfers Rosack or his dad Luis (Luwin) Helfers

Hi, I am looking for birth, baptisim or passport registry from my dad's great grandfather (Guillermo Helfers Rosack) he was born on 10th of july 1874 in hannover Germany (could be Lima Peru as well) or his father Luis (Luwin) Helfers who was born in Hamburg, Germany on august 15th (1844-1918).

Hello Maria,

I think first you should start the research in Peru: Marriage and death records? When did the family come to Peru?

Hannover wasn't only a city, but also an extendend kingdom which covers hundres of kilometers.

The Hamburg Passenger lists show a Louis Helfers, 58 years, living in "Hannover", who left the port of Hamburg, Germany, in 1879. Destination: Peru.

Just a "pure shot into the dark":

A Helfers family from Suttorf (part of Neustadt am Rübenberge, today: Niedersachsen / Lower Saxony, Germany - previously part of the: Königreich Hannover / Kingdom of Hannover) emigrated in the 1860s to America

The village of Suttorf, Lower Saxony, was part of the parish Basse, Lower Saxony.

Church books of Basse are online available at Archion here:

However: in 1844 no person with the family Helfers was born / baptized in the parish of Basse.

The very first birth / baptism of an illegitimate boy child Helfers in Suttorf / church book: Basse was in 1849

(The name of this child is mentioned in the emigration note which I linked above!)

At the time of this birth / baptism this child's father lived in Osterwald (today: part of Garbsen, Lower Saxony)

A family tree for Helfers from Garbsen is available here:

That tree provides a lead to the village of Marienwerder, Lower Saxony. These church books are also online available at Archion:

However: in 1844 again no person with the family Helfers was born / baptized in the parish of Marienwerder.

Bottom line:
yes, the family name Helfers did exist about 1840 in the former Kingdom of Hannover, but it's still somehow like finding the needle in the haystack.

This is your tree, right?

:giggle:

Hi! this is very helpful, I am looking for the records in Peru as well next week since I have to go to the city because they are not available online unfortunately. This is my family tree https://www.familysearch.org/es/tree/pedigree/landscape/LDNB-WMV

I trust my assumption is correct.

If so, why are there conflicting data in your tree at MyHeritage compared to your tree on FamilySearch?

Guillermo Helfers Rosack died on November 1, 1913 in Peru and was buried on November 11, 1913 in Cercado, Lima, Peru.

In one of your trees you say that he was born in Hannover in 1874 and in the other one you say that he was born in Lima?!?

Don't you have his death certificate / death record from Lima, Peru?

Hi, thank you so much for this information. Would you recommend to look for Guillermos records in Peru or his children?

I don't have access to the link you shared, but this is my family tree https://www.familysearch.org/es/tree/pedigree/landscape/LDNB-WMV Guillermo was my father's great grand father (the dad of his grandmother) and I am looking for any records that proof that they are german to obtain german citizenship through declaration, so the consulate on peru has asked for this and all of birth certificates from my relatives that link me to them

I will look for them next week, however from the information I have is that he might have born in hannover or in Peru, but he held both nationalities because of his parents

Hello Maria,

I would recommend to all available exhaust records in Peru, such as births, marriages, deaths, immigration.

Civil records of Peru from 1874-1996 are online in ancestry.com, I cannot find this Luis Helfers, born 1821. Or did he only visit his son (?) Luis (1844-1918) and the went back to Germany?

Do you know there profession of the family members? The emigration to Peru is exceptional. Since your family lived in a large city like Lima, were they maybe merchants?

Hi, they lived in Lima Peru. Luis Helfers was born in Hamburg, Germany and one of his sons (Guillermo Helfers Rosack) was born either in Lima or Hannover, I will try and get his peruvian records next week https://www.familysearch.org/es/tree/pedigree/landscape/LDNB-WMV

What was the religious belief of your ancestors?

Roman Catholic ---- Evangelical / Lutheran ---- Jewish ......?

Records on Archion -with some exceptions- are those for Evangelical / Lutheran parishes only.

Probably Lutheran (Protestant, Evangelical), but since they moved to Peru my family history untill my grandmother is catholic

Thanks, that's what I assumed.

BTW the family tree on MyHeritage has Mariella Helfers as it's administrator and was last updated about 2 1/2 years ago.
So maybe your subscription is no longer valid and thus you no longer have access to it. Anyway, it's now out of relevance for your research.

That's an important information. It explains why your family doesn't appear in the emigration lists (indexed in Arcinsys) though I doubt that they came from the city of Hannover (or Hamburg), but maybe from "somewhere" in the kingdom of Hannover.
