This is in Northern Germany during the time when they changed their surnames to the farm name, and I need to confirm that this is what happened?? His daughter was married with the surname Cording, but her first child was born Rolffs. This records has Rolffs after his name. Can someone help me read record # 39?

Thanks so much!
Lynn

You are certainly aware that is a death record for Friederich Anthon Cording aka Rolffs who drowned at sea near Amsterdam/Netherlands, right?

Here's a start:

Friederich Anthon Cording oder
Rolffs Einwohner ...........
..... ist auf der Zuyder-See
bey Amsterdam ertruncken
dn 11tn und für ihn in hießiger
Kirche gedencket dn 27tn Julii
alt: 34 Jahre

...for "Zuyder-See" see i.e. here:

Thank you--no I didn't know any of that except name and date--I saw the word Netherlands, but didn't know why. Does the rest of the writing down to the bottom of the page pertain to him, or is it something unrelated?

I can read genealogical words in German, but this is completely new to me. I can run typed German through google translate for a reasonable idea, so I really appreciate the help!

Kind regards,
Lynn

The rest of this text deals with some more "details" of this ship accident.

The person recorded in no. 38 "Johann Gerd Sander aka Schlueter" also drowned on this same ship.

Some missing text in my first reply to your post need to read:

Friederich Anthon Cording oder
Rolfs Einwohner auf dem Mäklen

Mäklen = Mäkel today part of Barnstorf
