I am researching on behalf of an American gentleman. I just found the marriage record of his 2nd g-grandfather in the US, where it seems to be indicated as birthplace "Greifswald, Stralsund, Preussen".
Birth about 1828.
Last name GERKE or GERECKE.
Under which parish should I search for the birth record?

Hello Patrizia,

I think you must search in the records of Greifswald. Greifswald belonged to district government Stralsund and Stralsund belonged to Prussia. I don´t know wich church records exist and when the church records of Greifswald begin.

On the Homepage of the association for familysearch in this region you will find an overview about the availability and location of the churchbooks:

As it seems that the the Greifswald branch of the archive is currently closed for construction reasons and you are not living in Germany maybe it is best to contact the member Gabi Neumann (https://www.pommerscher-greif.de/ansprechpartner.html) mentioned as contact partner for the region Greifswald to get more information. She has also a homepage where the familynames Gehrke, Gerecke are listed:
