Is the word Sartor used in German or was the person who wrote the record using Latin to designate occupations? Perhaps that would explain the way the letter S was written. The sponsor was described as a Praefectus. I think the noun sartor is rarely used in English. The adjective sartorial may be used somewhat more commonly in English but I wouldn't expect everyone to know the meaning unless the context made it clear.
