Greetings Friends ,
I'm so grateful that this form exists to try to obtain some answers about an amazing book I have in my possession. I hold an original copy of Melanchthon's Loci Communes from 1557. I have done research on Melanchthon and understand his place in history. I do have pages in the book that have handwritten names and I am on a quest to find out more about those individuals .
The book was found in the attic of my great grandparents house in Lake Park, Minnesota in the United States. Our family owned a small grocery store in town and his story in 1986 when the book was found was that a gentleman came into the store and offered the book in trade for groceries. That would have been in the early 1920's to early 30's (after World War I) .
The names in the book that I am attempting to research are Johannes Fugman, Johan Christoph Gebbardi (who I believe to have been a pastor in Berlstedt. I believe his son Johannes Christoph Gebhardi was a wine grower in the region and wrote in the book in 1725. The third name is the more difficult to figure out. There is a name on the title page of the book that appears to be the Superintendent of Streitburgen (Streigberg?) that I cant figure out . It appears to read “Ex dome Doctor’s Aurily Streitburgen Superintendent”.
How the book came to the US from Germany is such a fascinating story that I may never totally know or understand but I am on a quest to find out everything I can about the people who touched this amazing piece of history. Thanks to all who can help or have suggestions
I am struggling with how to upload photos that I have on my phone to the post as there isn’t a link to put in.
Best
